Introduction/Introduktion.

English: ‘A place in the dune plantation’, 2019, was my final master thesis at Aalborg University. The project was to create a nature hospice located in Tornby Klitplantage, Denmark. I have chosen to show some of the material here, but our presentation report can be viewed here.

Danish: ‘A place in the dune plantation’, 2019: Dette var mit endelige speciale ved Aalborg Universitet.

Concept/Koncept.

English: A key aspect and value was nature and landscape surrounding the building site. The concept was to embed the hospice into the around the topography. The building is split into two main buildings with three glass hallways, where you might experience the surrounding nature, in a safe space. Furthermore, the hallways works as a wind blockage and dividing the inner courtyards. The hospice itself is camouflaged into nature, by keeping a low ceiling height with a flat roof, using natural cladding materials and a wild grass roof, as well as the preservation of the pines.

Plandrawing/Plantegning.

English: The main entrance is located in the mid-right on the plandrawing. When entering the hospice, you are standing between the two main buildings, where you on the right side, have the daycare and the office area. The other building is mainly the hospice patient rooms, with a common area and functions such as reflection, wellness, library, and guest rooms. When you entering the lobby, you ar meet by the reception. From the lobby, there is direct access to both the day center or the main open hallway from which the patient rooms and common functions are located.

Section/Snit.

English: Enter the courtyards, flush with local vegetation and all at a height that makes it accessible to anyone, patient, children and the like. With a segmented pathway, there are small niches created, where they may find a small space for outdoor reflection.

Exterior/Ydre.

English: The hospice is embedded into the landscape, with a grass roof and the wooden cladding that allows the building to blend into its surroundings. Tornby Klitplantage is a dune plantation, and the hospice is located at a high point of the landscape. The patient room is located orientated to the heath, where the staff and daycare center is pushed into the coniferous green forest, in which it may seem hidden. The building opens up around the common area, which is situated on the edge of the place, with a glorious view directed to the diversified dune area, which leads to the North Sea.

Interior/Indre.

English: The interior mainly consists of gray bricks and wood to enforce the feeling of home. The patient room has large panoramic windows, that can access the terrace, while still maintaining a direct connection to the surrounding nature. In every room, there is a strip of windows at the ceiling, to bring in natural light. This prevents ‘outsiders’ to stair into the room, which gives the room privacy while keeping the natural light. The construction is created as a simple column, beam system, which is made in local pine wood.
