English: Today, we are becoming aware of the consequences of climate change and global warming. The long periods of warm weather increase the risk of starting a wildfire. It is a global climate problem.
This project was a competition held by ‘House In Forest’, where I had to create a house, located in a forest and focusing on wooden structures. I decided to go into depth with how to create a new home for the people who have lost their house in a wildfire. The house had to be low-cost, fast to construct, fire-resistant, sustainable and created as a prefabricated, modular unit system.
Danish: I dag bliver vi gjort opmærksomme på konsekvenserne af klimaændringerne og den globale opvarmning. De lange perioder med varmt og tørt vejr øger risikoen for at starte skovbrande. Det er et globalt klimaproblem.
Dette projekt var en konkurrence afholdt af “House In Forest”, hvor huset placeres i en skov med fokus på trækonstruktioner. Gennem projektet valgte jeg at arbejde med, hvordan man skaber et nyt hjem for de mennesker, der har mistet deres hus i en skovbrand. Huset skulle være billigt, hurtigt at konstruere, brandbestandigt, bæredygtigt og være et præfabrikeret, modulopbygget enhedssystem.
English: The concept was to create a small modular unit, which was prefabricated. Every unit is identical to make it even faster to construct. The roof is created as a ‘folding roof’ with solar panels underneath, which might seem weird, but the idea was to expand the overall surface, that could be used for solar panels or boost-reflectors, which is a mirror that reflects the sunbeams into the solar panels. The boost-reflectors will therefor be an inexpensive solution to increase the efficiency of the solar panels. Furthermore, the roof also acts as a form of solar shading, but can also protect the solar panels from possible wildfire if the roof is closed.
Danish: Konceptet var at skabe en lille modulær enhed, der blev præfabrikeret. Hver enhed er identisk for at gøre det hurtigere at konstruere. Taget er designet som et ‘sammenklappet tag’ med solcellepaneler under taget, hvilket resulterede i at udvide den samlede overflade, der kan bruges til solcellepaneler eller til boost-reflekter, som er et spejl, der reflekterer solstrålerne ind i solpanelerne. Denne boost-reflekter vil derfor være en billig løsning for at øge effektiviteten af solpanelerne. Endvidere fungerer taget også som solafskærmning, men kan også beskytte solpanelerne mod en eventuel skovbrand, hvis taget lukkes.
English: The fact that homeowners have different requirements for their home in terms of square meters, became the reason this project was created as a small unit, which could be placed according to the client’s needs. The unit is around 23 sqm and designed as a square to give the best possible architectural combinations. In the example above, there has been used fife units, to create a home with the following functions: garage, living room, kitchen, bedroom and a huge bathroom with a sauna.
Danish: Husejere er ikke ens og har mange forskellige krav og ønsker til deres hjem med hensyn til kvadratmeter, funktioner og placering af disse. I dette projekt har beboerne mulighed for at sammensætte deres eget hjem. Huset er opdelt af en enhed på omkring 23 m2 og er designet som et kvadrat for at give de bedst mulige arkitektoniske kombinationer. I eksemplet ovenfor er fem enheder, som er brugt til at skabe hjemmet med følgende funktioner: Garage, stue, køkken, soveværelse og et stort badeværelse med sauna.
English: In a situation, where a wildfire has occurred, homes may be lost and need to be rebuilt shortly after. It is therefore important to create a new home, which is affordable, practical, convenient, efficient and easy to construct. That is why, this project was designed as a prefabricated system, which will be delivered as a single unit. The client will decide the number of units, that are required for the home. The base will be created by mass fill pad foundations and thereafter a flatbed truck with a crane will deliver the prefabricated unit elements, which also can be used for the assembling. Windows, doors, and plumbing will be placed at the location of the chosen building site.
Danish: I en situation, hvor en skovbrand er opstået, kan hjem gå tabt og skal genopbygges kort efter. Det er derfor vigtigt, at skabe et nyt hjem, som er overkommeligt, praktisk, effektivt og let at konstruere. Derfor blev dette projekt designet som et præfabrikeret system, der vil blive leveret som en enkelt enhed. Kunden bestemmer antallet af enheder, der kræves til hjemmet. Soklen er udført med punktfundamenter, hvorefter en blokvogn med kran leverer de præfabrikerede enhedselementer, som også kan bruges til at montere elementerne. Vinduer, døre og VVS vil blive installeret og monteret på byggepladsen.
English: It was a priority to design this wooden house as resourceful as possible. The size of the unit is based on the standard 2440x1220mm dimensions of the interior plywood. The idea were to use the burned-down tree logs, for the exterior cladding.
Danish: Det var en prioritet at designe dette træhus så ressourcefuldt som muligt. Størrelsen på enheden er baseret på standard indvendige krydsfiner af 2440×1220 mm. Ideen var at bruge de nedbrændte træstammer til udvendig beklædning.
English: It was important for me, that the house had to be sustainable. The house itself had to be ‘off-the-grid’, so alternative ways had to be implemented into the design. The electricity is created by the roof, which can open up for the solar panels with booster reflectors, which improves the overall solar efficiency. The heating will be distributed by radiators, that gets heated by the fire stove in the living room. The rainwater is collected in a gravity-fed harvesting system, which is used for flushing toilets, and the sprinkler system, that can protect the house in case of a wildfire. The house is created by local timbers and the facade/roof is made by burned trees, that are cut into a raw cladding.
Danish: Det var vigtigt for mig, at huset skulle være bæredygtigt. Selve huset skulle være ‘off-the-grid’, og derfor benyttes der alternative teknikker, som blev implementeret i designet. Elektriciteten er skabt af taget, der kan åbne op for solcellepanelerne med boost-reflekter, hvilket forbedrer den samlede soleffektivitet. Opvarmningen distribueres af radiatorer, der bliver opvarmet af brændeovnen i stuen. Regnvandet opsamles i et tyngdekrafts tank-system, der bruges til skylning af toiletter, og sprinkleranlægget, der kan beskytte huset i tilfælde af en skovbrand. Huset er skabt af lokale byggematerialer, hvor taget og facader er skabt af brændte træer, der er udskåret til en rå træbeklædning.
