English: This project was an open competition by ARKxSITE. I decided to participate since I found the topic interesting. The idea was to create a visiting site and museum for the ‘Aldeia Da Mata’ dolmen in Portugal. The project was inspired by a classical cloister and was situated into nature, to keep the view towards the dolmen, which was the main attraction. The poster for the competition can be seen here.
Imagine a place where you might feel the extraordinary landscape and an embracement of historical significance. You will discover that this site cloister of the ’Aldeia Da Mata’ dolmen, might be that place. In this project, the site cloister was designed as an interpretation of the traditional cloister, which was separated into individual ’houses’, with an open ’inner courtyard’, that has an orientation towards the megalithic dolmen. Each ’houses’ are carefully situated around the dolmen and by using view lines from the interior of the dolmen to maintain the intended experience.
Danish: Dette projekt var en åben konkurrence fra ARKxSITE. Jeg besluttede at deltage, da jeg fandt emnet interessant. Ideen var at oprette et besøgende sted og et museum for ‘Aldeia Da Mata’ stendyssen i Portugal. Projektet blev inspireret af et klassisk kloster og er beliggende i naturen for at bevare udsigten mod dolmen, som var hovedattraktionen. Posteren for denne konkurrence kan opleves her.

English: The architectural concept for this cloister was carefully chosen with the contemplative nature in mind. The ’houses’ were placed into the terrain, leaving the wild grass roofs visible, to create a site cloister, that would disappear into the landscape, with an interpretation and connection to the tumulus. The significance of natural light is part of the design by illuminating and creating exceptional and sensorial patterns caused by the cloistered design and colonial paddern windows. The vision was to embrace the meaningful story of the ’Aldeia Da Mata’ dolmen, Portugal.
Danish: Det arkitektoniske koncept til dette kloster, var skabt ud fra et fokus på, at bevare det omkringliggende landskab og atmosfære. ‘Husene’ blev placeret i terrænet, hvilket efterlod de vilde græstag synlige, for at skabe et projekt, som ville forsvinde ind i landskabet med en fortolkning og historisk forbindelse til gravhøjene. Det naturlige lys blev integreret i designet, ved at skabe usædvanlige og spirituelle mønstre, der er forårsaget af de ’klosteriske’ buer og de småsprossede vinduer. Visionen gennem projektet var at omfavne den meningsfulde historie om ‘Aldeia Da Mata’ stendyssen, Portugal.
English: The design is split into four buildings, which houses different functions. When you arrive to the place, you enter the building to the upper right, which mainly consists of the entrance, administration office, gifts shop, cafe with a small kitchen and restrooms. From this building, you enter the inner courtyard with a long water mirror and an exterior exhibition.
The second building at the water mirror is a permanent exhibition with a multi-purpose space, which can be used for small exhibitions, lectures or meeting room. The house in the bottom left consists of a classroom, restroom and workshop area. The last building is the research area and archive, which can be used for archaeologists and students.
Danish: Projektet er opdelt i fire bygninger, der huser forskellige funktioner. Når du ankommer til stedet, kommer du ind øverst til højre, hvilket hovedsageligt består af lobby, administrationskontor, butik, café med et lille køkken og toilet faciliteter. Fra denne bygning bevæger man sig ind i den indre gårdhave, med et centreret langt vandspejl og en udvendig udstilling.
Den anden bygning ved vandspejlet er primært en permanent udstilling med et multi-rum, der kan bruges til midlertidig udstilling, foredrag eller mødelokale. Bygningen nederst til venstre består af et klasseværelse, et toilet og et værksted. Den sidste bygning er forskningsområdet og arkiv, der kan bruges af arkæologer og studerende.
English: As seen in the section above, the building is embedded into the landscape only showing the rooftops, which is coved in the wild grass, from the place. The idea was for the building to grow from the ground as a natural element. As an interpretation of a burial mound (tumulus), which has historical references to the dolmen.
The ‘Aldeia Da Mata’ dolmen became the main focus, by maintaining a direct view towards the dolmen from all directions. Every building was placed in a way, that they would not block the view while experiencing the atmosphere from the interior of the dolmen.
Danish: Snittegningerne illustrerer, hvordan bygningen er nedgravet i landskabet og viser kun hustagene, belagt med vildt græs fra stedet. Tanken var at bygningen skulle ekstruderes fra jorden, som et naturligt element. Ideen var at fortolke en gravhøj, som var en kirkegård skabt af en jord-bakke og sten.
‘Aldeia Da Mata’ blev hovedelementet ved at bevare udsynet mod gravhøjen fra alle retninger. Hver bygning blev placeret på en sådan måde, så de ikke blokerede udsigten for den oplevede atmosfære fra stendyssens indre.
